The opening sequence to any film needs to be gripping and exciting to ensure the audience choose to watch the film rather than an alternative. The Dark Knight's opening sequence does not disappoint.
The opening sequence of The Dark Knight is automatically tense and thrilling which allows the audience watching to be introduced to the setting and tone of the film.
Diegetic sound is used throughout the opening sequence. We first hear the sound of breaking glass, which is effective because this is a realistic sound making the audience feel like this could happen in real life as well as in movies. In contrast non-diegetic sound is used in order to add tension and excitement. This is effective as it builds the mood of the scene whilst still being realistic. There is a high level of tension throughout the opening sequence which is generated by the use of both non-diegetic and diegetic sound.
The camera zooms into the mask, which gives the audience an insight into what is to come later on in the film. The identity of the person committing the crime is kept secret until the end of the opening sequence which grips the audience as they are curious of who the main mask figure is. The use of these masks are dissimilar to what clown masks are usually used for (to entertain and humour children). Stereotypically bank robbers wear masks however, the fact they are killing each other off suggests that they are apart of a joke just like clowns in a circus.
When the Joker is revealed (a well know character) there is a close up of his face. This allows the audience to see his painted face which has similarities and contrasts to the mask he was wearing just moments before. The music becomes lower in key and darker when the Jokers identity was revealed, which shows that he is a evil yet a familiar character.
