Task 2 - Scream Analysis

We have decided to analyse the opening scene to "Scream" as we feel that the first 5 minutes of this film build up extreme tension using simple techniques that we can gain inspiration from for the making of our opening scene, which we are thinking of basing around horror/thriller.

In this scene, mise-en-scene is used when we are presented with the ringing of the telephone. The close up shot of just the telephone draws us to a conclusion that the person ringing is someone mysterious; this begins the build up of tension in the scene.

The establishing shot in this scene shows that the woman lives in an isolated location. This adds to the suspicion of the man on the telephone as he mentions how "The police will never arrive to her house in time". The tension builds further as we discover that the woman has no escape from the man who is supposedly watching her.

The non-diegetic sound of the popcorn popping in the background further builds the suspense of the man on the telephone as it is a loud, distracting noise that breaks the silence and the popcorn becomes bigger and bigger as the woman gets more scared and worried about the situation she is in.

In this scene, there is an enigma code as once the man says "I want to know who I am looking at" the mid shot of the woman slightly pans to the doors, and we expect a jump scare to occur of the man at the windows.

Shortly after, there is another enigma code when the doorbell rings and the woman immediately jumps out of her skin. There is a constant build up of tension and whether or not we will be presented with a jump scare.
