The opening sequence of Se7en is immediately gripping by not revealing a lot of information about the film.We do not meet any characters in the opening sequence, yet we identify straight away that the story is going to be tense and the characters are going to be strange and peculiar.
The music in the opening sequence is loud and tense, which makes the audience gripped from the very beginning. I think this is effective as it makes the audience aware of the type of film straight away, as the music is fast-paced just like the film.We can also hear high pitch screeches and rattling throughout the clip, which is also a use of non-diegetic sound, sound like they are from someone screaming.
A close up is used at the very beginning of the opening sequence of a book. This is effective as it gives nothing away to the audience, yet gives them clues about what may be to come in the film. For instance, the audience gets the idea that this book will play an important part in the film although not know why yet.
The Mise-En-Scene used throughout the opening sequence is low-key lighting. This gives the clip a eerie feel and portrays the film as a tense thriller. There are shadows throughout the opening sequence of Se7en, with parts being illuminated which also is effective as it adds to the tension.
